Insurance Policies

Most people haven’t read their insurance policies because they are long and contain technical language that can be difficult to understand.

What is the difference between “Replacement Cost Value” (RCV) and “Actual Cash Value” (ACV)? Which type of coverage does a policy provide for the Dwelling, Other Structures, and Personal Property?

What is the applicable deductible amount for a given type of claim?

Does your policy require a minimum percentage of coverage compared to the replacement cost of the property? If it does, does the coverage amount meet this requirement? If it doesn’t, is there a penalty for not meeting the minimum percentage of coverage?

Does the policy allow the insurance company to withhold depreciation from the settlement proceeds? Under what conditions is this allowed? Does the policy allow you to recover the withheld funds?

Are there any laws, ordinances, or other governmental proclamations that could supersede any provisions of the policy?

Does the policy contain coverage for mold?

What actions must you take to preserve your rights under the policy?
